If you’ve become aware of how air quality has changed over the years, you might be in the market for an air purifier. Selecting the “right one” for your home can feel overwhelming. Here are some important things to consider before making a purchase.
7 Things to Consider when Buying an Air Purifier
1. Size of space
While you may be quick to think that a single purifier can purify the air in an entire home, that unfortunately isn’t the case.
Air purifiers come with what’s called a CADR—Clean Air Delivery Rate. What is CADR? The rating reflects the amount of air (in cubic feet per minute) that is cleaned of particles.
In other words, the CADR is the effectiveness of an air purifier in removing contaminants in a space of a certain size.
According to CDC and EPA recommendations, you’ll want to choose a CADR that meets or exceeds the square footage of the space in your home. Even better, you should look for one that circulates the air more frequently—at least 4 times per hour.
2. Filter capabilities
With increased awareness of indoor air contaminants, the market has exploded with air purifiers that are… less than ideal.
That said, you’ll want to look for air purifiers with HEPA filters. Or, even better, UltraHEPA filters!
While standard HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, UltraHEPA filters remove at least 99.99% of particles as small as 0.003 microns—or those 100 times smaller than the HEPA standard.
That said, AirDoctor’s UltraHEPA filters capture pollen, mold spores, dust, pet hair, smoke, dander, bacteria, and viruses.
Thanks to their carbon activated VOC and pre-filters, you won’t have to worry about VOCs like formaldehyde, ozone, and particulate matter (PM2.5) either.
3. Automatic sensors
There’s nothing worse than buying an air purifier only to realize that it’s not cleaning the air like it should. You likely made the purchase for peace of mind, right?
To take all the worries out of contaminated air, be sure to look for air purifiers that are equipped with professional-grade sensors. These will assess the air quality in your space and automatically adjust the purifier to the correct level of purification.
When good air quality is detected by an AirDoctor, Auto-Mode will automatically slow down the machine to save on energy—while still ensuring safe air.
4. Maintenance requirements
All air purifiers will require a little bit of maintenance from you. In order for the air purifier to work optimally, you’ll have to regularly change the filter(s).
Fortunately, AirDoctor makes filter changes a breeze. They come with an easy-to-grip white tab for easy removal. Through our official store, you can also save time and money by ordering one- or two-year packs for most models. AirDoctor has an advanced FILTER CHANGE alert that will let you know when it is time to replace your filter.
5. Child lock
For clean indoor air, you should keep the air purifier running at all times. To prevent curious kiddos from interrupting the purification process, a child lock can be helpful.
When the control lockout feature is enabled, none of the buttons on the control panel will work when touched by a child (or pet).
6. Sound levels
Air purifiers work by running a fan—which means all of them make a noise. The noise is measured in decibels (dB). The louder the noise, the higher decibel.
Many air purifiers reach up to 80 decibels, which can be quite annoying if you’re enjoying a nice dinner or watching a movie. If a brand doesn’t advertise their sound levels, you could likely assume that they’re at the higher end of the decibel spectrum.
We at AirDoctor like family conversations just as much as the next person, which is why we’ve equipped all of our purifiers with a whisper-quiet fan. Even at the highest speed, they only reach a maximum sound level of 59 dB.
7. Manufacturer reputation
When it comes to protecting yourself or family from dangerous air contaminants, only the best will do. When looking for an air purifier, it’s important to look for one that’s well-vetted and backed by the support of outside sources.
